Abstract

The knowledge of the morphological features of the digestive tract, associated with the digestion and absorption processes is essential for the understanding of fish nutrition and physiology, assisting in planning diets for the creation and management of animals with potential for fish farming. Therefore, the objective of this study is to perform a histological and histochemical study of the mucosa of the digestive tract of adult Leiarius marmoratus. Ten especimes from Centro Nacional de Pesquisa e Conservação de Peixes Continentais, Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade - CEPTA/ICMbio, Pirassununga, SP, will be used. For histological analysis, fragments of the esophagus, stomach and intestines will be fixed in modified Karnovsky solution and embedded in histories. The histological sections of 3 µm will be stained with hematoxylin and eosin and toluidine blue. For histochemical studies, the tissue fragments are fixed in Bouin solution, embedded in paraplast, and histological sections of 7µm will be used for routine staining with emphasis on detection of mucopolysaccharides (neutral and acidic) by reactions of PAS, Alcian Blue (pH 1,0 and pH 2,5), and PAS+AB pH 2,5.(AU)
