Abstract

Refractive errors are still a major cause of blindness worldwide. Such errors in children can lead to severe learning disorders and irreversible amblyopia, if not detected early. There are studies about the frequency of these errors in some Brazilian cities; however, there is not a study concerning this in the zone of Campinas. Thus, studies that assess the frequency of refractive errors among the various age groups of students can assist in the elaboration, planning, and implementation of public health vision. As well as serving as an excellent marker of the quality provided by public health. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of refractive errors in children and young Brazilians in school-age in four age groups/scholar, as follows: 5-6 years (1st year of elementary school), 9-10 years (5th year of elementary school), 13-14 years (9th year of elementary school) and 17-18 years of age (3rd-year high school). Around 1000 children from public schools in Campinas will be evaluated, with ocular biometry examinations, determination of visual acuity, and refractive error. Children who have refractive error identified will receive a prescription for corrective lenses or, if necessary, will be sent to the appropriate service. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the FCM.(AU)
