Abstract

Indirect chlorophyll readings obtained with a portable chlorophyll meter, may indicate a time of increased demand for nitrogen (N) by plants and whether or not they need it's supplying in topdressing, so the determination of relative chlorophyll index (RCI), using a portable chlorophyll meter, can be an alternative used to predict the N need of the bean; however, there is doubt about which the leaf suitable for defining the need for N by the crop. Thus, the objective of this study is to establish the best diagnosis leaf to define the N needs of the common bean by indirect measurement readings of chlorophyll content through the use of a portable chlorophyll meter. To this end, there will be a study with two field experiments, one with each cultivar (Pérola e IPR Eldorado), during the rainy season in the year 2011 with the purpose of establishing the best diagnostic leaf (first, second and third leaf fully expanded trifoliolate leaf from the apex) to define the N needs of common bean crop, using the chlorophyll meter (Minolta SPAD-502). The experimental design is a randomized block with five N rates (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1) and four replications. Will be assessed: RCI in the first, second, and third trifoliolate leaf fully expanded, dry weight of shoots, leaf N content and shoot dry matter, the total quantity of N in the shoot, yield components (final plant population, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod and weight of 100 grains) and grain yield.(AU)
