Abstract

Many studies have evaluated the kinematics during elevation of the arm in subjects with shoulder impingement. However, if differences exist between subacromial and internal impingement has not been described yet. The purpose of this study is to compare scapular kinematics in subjects with subacromial and internal impingement. Sixty subjects with age between 18 and 60 years will be recruited for this study and divided in 3 groups: 1) subacromial impingement (n=20); 2) internal impingement (n=20); 3) control (n=20). All subjects will have the 3-D scapular kinematics evaluated during elevation of the arm using an electromagnetic system. Data collection will be done with the subjects standing in a relaxing position. Three repetitions will be performed. For each dependent variable (internal rotation, upward rotation, posterior tilt), a two-way ANOVA will be used to analyze the main effects of arm elevation (initial position, 30°, 60°, 90° e 120°) and group (subacromial impingement, internal impingement and control). A P<0.05 will be considered significant.
