Abstract In contemporary analytic philosophy, scepticism was discussed by many philosophers, among them Barry Stroud. For Stroud, scepticism was important, not because it is the correct position, but because it is the main epistemological challenge that leads to a deeper understanding of what knowledges involve. Among the sceptical problems, Stroud investigates carefully the so-called problem of the external world. He not only explores the sceptical doubt, but also the answers provided by many philosophers. Strawson and Davidson developed "transcendental arguments". Stroud, at first, rejects such a strategy as an answer to scepticism. Later, however, he came to develop his own kind of "transcendental argument" against sceptical doubt.(AU) | |
