Abstract

The notion of periphery and peripheral condition becomes important in Brazilian universitary geography from 1980s. Whereas urban studies, carried out by several social scientists, this is due to a combination of deep socio-territorial transformations of Brazilian cities with the rise of renewed perspective about the city from the 1970s and 1980s. Within the geographical science, the same period was also marked by important theoretical and methodological changes, with the emerging of theoretical models influenced by Marxism and Phenomenology. Moreover, there is also the ascension of so-called new cultural geography, which values and symbolic representations. In this context, the periphery ceases to be defined as an anomaly or a contradiction of capitalism, according to the theoretical position adopted. It is acknowledged the prospect of urban peripheries are permeated with cultural values and identity links themselves. We aim therefore to examine how the peripheral condition was approached within the cultural studies made by Brazilian universitary geography during the 1980s.
