Abstract Mangroves constitute unique ecosystems, with a high ecological value and high rates of productivity and biodiversity. These systems represent regions with species forming populations with a one-dimensional stepping-stone structure type. This kind of structure allows us to infer that these systems constitute discrete and isolated habitats, what indicates limited gene flow between populations of species that inhabit them. Studies on population structure allow us to set strategies for biodiversity conservation, revealing which geographical areas include the largest genetic diversity within populations of a species. In this way, the aim of this project is to analyze the variability of decapod crustaceans populations living in mangroves of São Paulo and surrounding areas using morphological and molecular markers (mitochondrial COI and nuclear 16S and H3). It will be possible to analyze which processes of gene flow maintain the biodiversity in these ecosystems, aiming at their conservation and evaluating the importance of mangroves as ecosystems that generate biodiversity. | |
