Abstract This research has as general question the manner in which different philosophical expressions were formed in a given period of time in the history of Brazil. Instead of considering these theories as absolutely separate from each other, we seek to find common problems that cut across all philosophical attempt. Such problems are divided into four areas of analysis: firstly, we try to see what function takes historiographic discourse both in respect of historical narratives that focus on philosophy, and as it concerns the relationship between philosophy and its history. Secondly, the collective constructions in which the various authors take part are envisaged, in order to grasp the role that the names of groups, systems or thought currents occupy in the very theoretical effort of each author. Besides, that way we can explore the different manners in which it was conceived the opposition between the notions of copy and originality throughout this history. Thirdly, it is considered the varied ways in which the idea of nationality was claimed or denied by philosophical reflection, as well as the way in which provided criteria for evaluating the political purpose of philosophy. Finally, we seek to characterize the conceptions of language present in the evaluations that theoretical adversaries make of each other, since the function they assign to the philosophical discourse is important for the way they understand the purpose of philosophy, as well as to establish limits before what is considered non-philosophy.
