Abstract Cycloplegia is paralysis of the eye ciliary muscle, resulting in the loss of visual accommodation. It can be caused by cycloplegic drugs such as Cyclopentolate (1%) and Tropicamide (1%). These two most used drugs had already been compared by several studies, including subjective and objectives analysis. Cyclopentolate (1%) has been considered the best accommodation inhibitor and a recent study showed that there is no difference in refractions' measures between both cycloplegic agents. The aim of this project is to compare the refraction measurement of children with and without cycloplegia. Will be included in this project are Brazilian children and youth of school age, divided into four groups: 5-6 years (1º year of primary school); 9-10 years (5º year of primary school), 13-14 years (9º year of primary school) e 17-18 years (3º year of high school). Will be analyzed approximately 1000 children of Campinas public schools using tests for visual acuity and automated refraction. The null hypothesis of this study says that for population triage, the automated refraction test without cycloplegia is not worse than the same test performed in patients with cycloplegia. The children with refractive errors will receive eyeglasses prescriptions and/or all the orientation needed. This project was approved by the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FCM - UNICAMP) Ethics Committee. (AU) | |
