Abstract

The order Characiformes is composed of 18 families, 270 genera and approximately 1674 species. In this Order, the family Characidae is one of the more numerous and complex in South America, with approximately 1057 described species. In this family, the genus Astyanax is the most common and diverse, with about 127 validated species and occurring in virtually all freshwater environments. The B chromosomes or supernumerary, additional elements are present in some species of plants, fungi and animals, can be found in different morphologies, and with varying frequency. Faced with this, intensive studies have been conducted in search of a better understanding of the origin, structure and function of these genomic elements, however, knowledge about the importance of this carrier for the species are still negligible. Studies on Astyanax bockmanni revealed the existence of supernumerary chromosomes in their karyotype structure, however, this population no further study was conducted in an attempt to get detailed data on this class of chromosomes. Therefore, the objective of this study is to characterize these B chromosomes in populations of different basins and A. bockmanni. The methodologies employed are the classical Giemsa banding, RON, C Band, and the molecular ribosomal genes, histone and repetitive elements, and B chromosome specific probes obtained by chromosomal microdissection technique. Thus, the results may assist in the proposed studies to unravel the origin and evolution of B chromosomes in A. bockmanni, and consequently in other fish species in this group. (AU)
