Abstract

The focus of this research came after the study of books aimed at analyzing psychiatric patient's artworks written by physician and intellectual Osório Thaumaturgo César (1895-1979). The observation of the aesthetic dimension in his books and his constant participation in the cultural and artistic life in São Paulo, sparked the interest in studying the construction of Osório Cesar's aesthetic thinking and the contribution of his ideas to Brazilian art. The historical reconstruction of this personality who took part in the interdisciplinary debate between medicine, psychology, culture and art, involves understanding São Paulo's intellectual and artistic scene, from 1920 to 1960, in which Osório Cesar lived and made important friends like José de Freitas Valle, Tarsila do Amaral, Mário de Andrade, Lasar Segall and Flávio de Carvalho. Thinking about the set of interests and ideas that brought together people coming from different fields of knowledge, leads this research to explore new historical perspectives of a relationship between art, medicine and culture.
