Abstract

The structural and physiological characteristics of the hematopoietic and lymphatic systems are widely known in domestic animals. However, studies for several species of aquatic mammals occurring in Brazil are scarce and fragmented. Despite all studies and conservation efforts for the creation of laws and protection areas of Brazilian marine fauna, much still remains unknown to the 39 cetacean species reported in the Brazilian coast. Due to the necessity of a better understanding of the physiological processes of small and large cetaceans occurring in Brazil, collaborating in the elucidation of the causes of stranding of these animals, this study aims to evaluate morphological and microscopically components of the lymphoid system of specimens Sotalia guianensis, Sotalia fluviatilis, Stenella clymene, Stenella longirostris, Inia geofrensis, Peponocephala electra and Globicephala macrorhynchus, stranded on the coast north and northeast Brazilian coast. Specimens of both sexes, different age classes (puppy, young adult) were obtained during stranding events in the North and Northeast coast of Brazil. For morphological and ultrastructural studies, organs will be collected following the protocol of Conduct for Beach Aquatic Mammals (REMANE, 2005). After collection, all samples will be washed, measured and photographed, being then submitted to light and electron microscopy techniques.
