Abstract

The present work aims to improve the knowledge about the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the genus Axonopus P. Beauv. (Poaceae), through a commented checklist of the Brazilian species, taxonomic revision of the species from the Cerrado (32 species - approximate number) and, phylogenetic analysis of the genus as a whole. Poaceae is a family of wide geographical distribution, including about 700 genera and 10,000 species worldwide, of which approximately 170 genera and 1,500 species are native from Brazil. There are several references to the utilization of Poaceae species, however, the most important commercial application is in fact it be the principal source of food for man. The grass family is among the five richest families in number of species of the plant kingdom and represent in America, one of the most important families from the taxonomic viewpoint. Despite the biological and economic significance, Poaceae still needs scientific investigations involving taxonomy and phylogeny. Axonopus P. Beauv. is inserted in subfamily Panicoideae, Paniceae tribe and comprises approximately 100 species in four sections. Most Axonopus species are native from America, where one of the most important centers of species diversification is found, 54 of them occurring in Brazil. The work will be based on literature survey, consults to national and international herbaria and collecting expeditions, which will serve for the analysis of populations in their natural environment and to obtain samples for DNA sequencing. As a final result, at least three papers will be published on journals of international distribution: commented checklist of Axonopus species from Brazil, taxonomic revision of Axonopus species from the Cerrado and phylogeny of the genus Axonopus.
