Abstract

The oceanic circulation off the Brazilian coast is governed by the South Atlantic Western Boundary Current System. Its velocity patterns have been almost entirely described by geostrophic calculations. The oceanic region off the coast of São Paulo (25S) is the site of origin of the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC). The oceanographic process that generates the IWBC is the South Equatorial Current (SEC) bifurcation in intermediate depths, called Santos Bifurcation. In June 2010 a survey called CERES-IV was conducted by R/V Antares (Brazilian Navy) and funded by PETROBRAS. The primary objective of this work is to describe the flow pattern in the Santos Bifurcation site using top-bottom direct velocity measurements collected during CERES-IV.(AU)
