Abstract

The study area, located near to Guarinos - GO (Brazil), is characterized by the occurrence of rocks interpreted as a Greenstone Belt sequence. According to the definition, this kind of sequence represent metavolcanosedimentary rocks of Archean age. However, geochronological data obtained for part of the Guarinos Greenstone Belt, as well as for a sequence that can be correlated to it (Crixas Greenstone Belt), indicate younger, non Archean, ages. The data also suggest that the package may not represent a single sequence, where the basal, metakomatiitic rocks, are older that the upper portion. It is worth mentioning that the area is well known for its gold deposits. However, the age of the mineralization is still an open debate. The aim of the present study is to preparate samples for in situ U-Pb dating of zircons from the Guarinos Greenstone Belt. Dating of these samples in future works will help to solve doubts about the age of the rocks and the gold mineralization.
