Study of natural aging of cool paints comparatively to conventional paints

Abstract

The project aims to continue the activities developed by the student Liborio Isabela Martins da Silva as a Fellow of TT-1 level in FAPESP Project: 2009/18246-0, "Formulation, characterization, performance, and durability of cool paints" where. In this project are being studied the performance and durability of three groups of paints, "cool" and conventional paints formulated in the laboratory. The third group of conventional paints was bought in the market. For the study, all paints were applied to the fiber cement substrate. The three groups have two levels of gloss, PVC: 30% and 50%, corresponding to matte and silk finishing, respectively, in white, yellow, brown and gray color. The coatings were characterized according to their physical properties such as reflectance, emissivity, color, and gloss. The behavior over time will be evaluated based on the exposure of painted specimens in natural aging sites in rural, urban, and marine environments. The evaluation of the physical characteristics of the paint film will be determined after six and twelve months of exposure periods. Measurements of reflectance, emissivity, brightness, and color, will be used as parameters for comparative evaluation and also verify the influence of the PVC. There are several studies demonstrating the effectiveness of cool paint but there is a lack of data on the durability of the reflective properties of these materials in different Brazilian microclimates.(AU)
