Abstract

The discussion about the internationalization of enterprises has grown in importance in Brazil since the 1990s due to the opening process of the Brazilian economy that occured during this period. Regarding the phenomenon of internationalization of enterprises, the studies produced over the years are based primarily on American, European and Japanese experiences. In this sense, scholars such as Stephen Hymer, Raymond Vernon, John Dunning, Buckley and Casson and John Williamson have produced several analysis and theories about the determinants of foreign investment. However, what we observe today is the intensification of the process of internationalization of firms of the emerging economies, including Brazil, since 1980. On this aspect, various studies were produced by Helpman, Melitz and Yeaple, Prochnik, Esteves and Freitas, Veiga and Iglesias, Arbix, Salerno and De Negri, Sauvant, Hemais, among others. This research aims to review the literature on the subject mentioned above, with special attention to the Brazilian case.
