Abstract

The environmental contamination produced by inadequate disposal of wastes has become a worldwide concern. The characterization and development of techniques to minimize and prevent this contamination have resulted in many studies in scientific and/or technological scopes. Research conducted by environmental geotechnic sector has contributed to the understanding of toxic elements transport, as well as to the development of most appropriate techniques to mitigate the mobility of these contaminants. Thus, this proposal aims to contribute to knowledge improvement on application of residual tropical soils (natural and/or compacted) as low-cost techniques to the waterproofing of waste disposal areas, and also to propose solutions to the environmental problem in Ribeira Valley region.
