Abstract

The establishment of sections in Eumaeini contributed significantly to the classification of the family Lycaenidae even with so many taxonomic problems. However, many studies have yet to be performed, aiming to understand the phylogenetic relationships of genera and species, and reconstructing the evolutionary history of biologically relevant characters (eg. sex organs) for the understanding of speciation processes that contribute to the significant diversity of the group. Thus, the main objective of the present project is to establish a robust classification of the Atlides Section, inferring phylogenetic relationships for the monophyletic group formed by the genera Theritas and Arcas. As consequences of this objective, we will be testing the monophyly of the genus Theritas, based on morphological characters; proposing monophyletic groups of species in Theritas, for further review of the species and description of three possible new species recognized in Robbins (2004); testing the monophyly of the group formed by the genera Theritas and Arcas, besides the relationships among its species, based on morphological characters, and ultimately, we will be providing guide lines for understanding the evolution of secondary sexual characters found in the Atlides Section.
