Abstract

In this study, we will test the effect of temperature on the social interactions of Astronotus ocellatus, an Amazonian cichlid. The temperature corresponds to an environmental physical variable and this project continues a line of research on the effect of physical variables in social interactions in fish. Our hypothesis is that the rise in temperature increases aggressive interactions indirectly by increasing the locomotion rate. Will be compared agonistic behavior and social stability in groups of juveniles' A. ocellatus that will be submitted to three treatments: 21 ° C, 27 ° C and 33 ° C (n = 15 per treatment). Three animals are grouped by 48 hours in tanks with water temperature maintained at 27 ° C. This temperature is reduced to 21 ° C, maintained at 27 ° C and increased to 33 ° C. Individuals will be held for eight days and aggressive behavior will be recorded on 10 minutes film each day. The frequency of aggressive interactions between treatments and observation periods will be compared using analysis of variance for repeated measures (parametric data) or by Friedman ANOVA followed by Dunnet and Dunns tests for multiple comparisons (nonparametric data). The social stability (r) will be compared between treatments using one-way ANOVA. (AU)
