Abstract

Objectives: to establish reference intervals for these acute-phase proteins in plasma in calves with or without clinical signs of enteritis, and determine whether one or all of these acute-phase proteins could be used as an indicator of prognosis for the development and/or recovery of the disease in calves housed with animals with the different age range in the same pasture by means of (SDS-PAGE).Animals: 19 Holstein calves with or without umbilical hernia. Procedures: Plasma samples from calves with (n=7) or without (n=12) clinical signs of enteritis will be evaluated for determination of acute-phase protein concentrations on days 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 of age. Data from the 2 groups will be compared. Clinical relevance: Values for these acute-phase proteins will be established for each group, and a potential inflammatory biomarker during the disease will be determined in calves with and without clinical signs of enteritis.(AU)
