Abstract

This work presents a new proposal for assessing the chemical compatibility of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes when exposed to typical environmental works. Similar to the conventional process of analysis, samples are exposed to the waste in the laboratory by periods (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 months) at elevated temperatures of 85, 75, 65, and 55 degrees. The physical and tensile properties of the materials will be evaluated every 30 days so that they compare their results with the results of the samples intact. The basic difference of this method is that in this case will be used a device developed in a previous project by FAPESP (Process No. 2010/12418-1) that allows not only measure the diffusion of materials but also serve as a container to accommodate samples with the waste. The advantage of this method is to provide greater control of the residual, reduction of the samples and the residue, reduction in odor from the waste, and handling of the equipment and samples. The results obtained will be compared to those previously obtained in similar samples in a conventional method of analysis.(AU)
