Abstract

The mão-pelada (Procycon cancrivorus) is an animal that belongs to the Family Procyonidae. This family presents a remarkable feature, the presence of five fingers, being able to perform moves in different directions. It is a solitary animal, nocturnal and the least arboreal of the procionideos, only using the trees to sleep during the day and to procreate. In order to preserve the species, this research aims to determine, objectively, measurements of the raccons's testicles, establishing subsides for future researches on the reproductive system in this species. To describe the histometric results of the seminiferous tubules of the racoons, six animals will be used, all coming from CECRIMPAS deva ser traduzida, a tradução é Breeding Center for Wild Animals Multiplication of the University Octávio Bastos Educational Foundation - São João da Boa Vista-SP. duly licensed by IBAMA under the number 02027.000.286/2004-92. The testicles will be processed by routine techniques of soaking in paraffin, cut in sequencial sections and analyzed, mapped and photographed by a Leica photomicroscope E-400 and analyzed by the LEICA DF 295 system, through bar measurements in micrometers and visual counting. After the collection of the morphometric data, these will be tabulated and analyzed statistically. Differences were analyzed through the analysis of variance ANOVA method.
