Abstract

The purpose of this research project is to analyze the activities of Amnesty International in Brazil since its foundation, in 1961, until the early years of the 1980s. Amnesty's activities in Brazil increased as the first torture charges against the Brazilian military regime (1964-85) reached the organization. This research project aims at investigating the action strategies of the organization concerning Brazilian political prisoners, its methods of investigation of human rights abuses charges, the strategies concerning the campaigns for publishing these charges, as well as the networks set between Amnesty's members and Brazilian opposition groups, which made the publishing of reports on torture possible. Like other European human rights organizations, Amnesty International tried to legitimate its actions through the human rights discourse, by employing it in a quite particular way, in straight association with the Christian principle of compassion. During the analyses of Amnesty's archives, the objective is to identify the different discourses and languages used by members of Amnesty International, controversial issues and public debates in letters, materials campaign and reports.
