Abstract

My maste’s research "Study of mise-en-bande: the dynamics of sound in Gus Van Sant’s Last Days" intends to investigate the idea of "mise-en-bande" as proposed by Rick Altman and his partners (2000), in order to understand the multiple functions of soundtrack within a film narrative. The stage at "Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema" in Lisbon will be a great opportunity for improvement of this research. I will have the opportunity to develop a soundtrack technical analysis supervised by Dr. Jose Manuel Gonçalves in his sound laboratory which is especially equipped to an accurate hearing. Furthermore, it will be possible to experiment some practical activities related to sound design, which will contribute uniquely to the research´s development. Dr. Gonçalves also is a renowned sound design in Portuguese cinema. We expect, therefore, the incorporation of the results - theoretical and practical - in the master thesis. (AU)
