Abstract

This work is a feasibility study of the FricRiveting technique on polycarbonate/AA 2024-T351 aluminum alloy spot joints by investigating the influence of process parameters on temperature development, microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints. Design of experiments and modeling neural networks are selected to evaluate the process feasibility. The joints were produced at the Institute of Research Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) in Germany. Temperature development was measured by infrared thermography. The mechanical properties of joints were determined by tensile tests. The macro and microstructural characteristics will be evaluated by optical microscopy and Vickers microhardness tests. The level of degradation of PC in the joints will be investigated by viscosimetry and FTIR. The fracture mechanisms will be investigated by analysis of optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All approaches will be applied in this work to understand, describe and predict the effect of main process parameters on the general properties of the joints. (AU)
