Abstract

In the book published by UNESP in 2002, I made the assumption that what we understand as space is one of our cosmology expressions, and this is what I have tried to show when it was established a relation between the main thinkers from Europe during Feudalism and the Enlightenment (around the centuries VI and XVIII), and some paradigmatic examples of the cartography produced in the same period of time (besides some examples of literature). In fact, the research proposed here is a continuation of the previous one, and identifies the multiple processes of displacement and relocation of the subjects of knowledge (individuals and/or groups). It seems to be good science to affirm that the societies and their subjects create and recreate their concepts of space and, moreover, that such action is necessary since the changes between Human and Nature relationships require new cognitive dimensions - which would point, at the limit, towards the creation or consolidation of new epistemes - and therefore new significances of the subjects in their being/ staying in the world. The circumstantial thesis to be pursued in this research proposes that it will be possible to identify, considering the cartography established in 1755 (Lisbon earthquake) and having the maps which supported the invasion of Africa as limit (from the Congress of Berlin in 1875), the determinations imposed by the first industrial revolution and the new conceptual dimensions related to the meaning of nature, city, culture, civilization, social class and National State and the relation of such concepts to the meaning of space.
