Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify physiological and behavior anxiety indicators in young people undergoing third molars extraction and to evaluate the effects of providing previous procedural and sensory information about the anxiety responses of these patients. Participate in this study 60 patients, 14 to 24 years, who require extraction of at least one third molar in a dental session. Patients will be selected and allocated randomly into two groups (Control and Experimental). The experimental design is divided into the following phases: Screening (Initial Interview, Pre-Surgical I and Audio-visual Preparation for the Experimental Group), Extraction (Pre-Surgical II) and Suture (Suture Removal). The Initial Interview presents open and closed questions about habits, dental experience and history of drug use. Moments Pre-Surgical I, II and Suture Removal involve application of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Questionnaire for assessment of anxiety indicators. The audio-visual preparation on extraction of third molar is presented only for Experimental Group. The data obtained by interview, STAI and Questionnaire for assessment of anxiety indicators scores will be analyzed using parametric and nonparametric statistical tests. Through psychological evaluation seeks determine if the audiovisual preparation interfere, or otherwise, on reductions of anxiety levels of participants undergoing third molar extraction.
