Abstract

Polarized sunglasses provides the user large visual comfort, being able to reduce the intense glare coming from the back-scattered reflection of light. Currently, these products are available on the market and are highly attractive to consumers. The Brazilian standard NBR15111(2004) (sun protection glasses, sun protection filters for general use and filters for direct observation of the sun), has specific requirements for polarizing sunglasses. However, in Brazil, it is not available on the national market such equipment for performing this particular measurement according to NBR15111(2004).Therefore, our task is to develop a prototype that provides measurements of the polarized filters of sunglasses as required by the Brazilian standard, NBR15111(2004). The prototype must check the direction of polarization of both lenses of the sunglasses and determine the angles with respect to the vertical axis and the angle between the pair of lenses of the same sunglasses, with an accuracy of 0.4°. Moreover, according to NBR15111(2004), the angle between the two polarization axis of the pair of lenses from the sunglasses should not exceed 6°.Also, the prototype must be able to quantify the polarization of the spectacles, by measuring the transmittance of the lens by incident lights parallel and perpendicular to the direction of polarization. We also hope to that this prototype be the first Brazilian equipment for determining the axis of polarization of sunglasses, according to the referred Brazilian standard. It is also expected that this work brings benefits to the Brazilians, which will be able to check on their consuming products.
