Analysis of the indication of monitoring at the Intensive Care Unit and the incidence of cardiorespiratory complications in children with obstructive breathing disorders following adenotonsillectomy

Abstract

Objective: to identify the incidence of respiratory complications and its major risk factors at the immediate postoperative period in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to adenoid, tonsillar or adenotonsillar hypertrophy in follow up at Otolaryngology and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu (FMB) of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP). Methods: in this descriptive, retrospective, and observational study there will be a survey of records/charts of children who underwent adeno- and or tonsillectomy, during the period January 2006 to December 2011 with a diagnosis of DRO in order to obtain a history focused on the chief complaint. There will be obtained demographic data (age, gender, BMI), clinical (type of surgical indication, comorbidities-asthma, obesity, neuropathy, heart disease, lung disease, genetic sindromes, and nephropathy), and polysomnographic results when performed (IAC, IAO, IH, and IDO) prior to surgery, and monitoring and clinical observation of postoperative complications developed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Inclusion criteria: Children aged 2-12 years, submitted to tonsil surgery due to obstructive respiratory disorder by the team of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu, Universidade Estadual Paulista, from January 2006 until December 2011 and forwarded to the monitoring in the pediatric ICU at the immediate postoperative period.(AU)
