Effect of mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome on the quality of life, mood and cognition, case-control study

Abstract

There is still no evidence that approaches the effects of Mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in case-control studies. Keeping this in view, the objectives of this study is to evaluate the effects of OSA on the following parameters: mood (anxiety and depression), quality of life, and cognition. To this end, we have two groups: Mild OSA and Normal Group. In the mild OSA group was included 30 patients of both genders, body mass index (BMI) d 35 kg/m2, age between 18 and 65 years, and clinical and polysomnographic diagnosis of mild OSA (apnea and hypopnea index (AHI) e 5 events per hour of sleep and d 15 events per hour of sleep). In the Normal group, 30 subjects were included in both genders, BMI d 35 kg/m2, age between 18 and 65 years, AHI <5, arousal index <15, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) d 9. Both groups underwent the following procedures: physical examination, ENT evaluation, baseline polysomnography (PSG), subjective assessment of mood (questionnaire anxiety and depression Beck inventory), Quality of life questionnaire [Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ), Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref), Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36)] and Performance Vigilance Test (PVT). For statistical analysis, we used descriptive analysis (mean ± standard deviation), and for analysis within groups at different times, a general linear model (GLM) was applied.(AU)
