Abstract The research aims to verify, by the elaboration of a social-historic board of the Opus Dei in Brazil, how the social practices of the institution configure themselves in the public space through the ressignification of the category work. Moreover, I propose to analyze how this discursive configuration specifies itself in São Paulo and, principally, in this state´s capital. The hypothesis is that in Brazil, where Opus Dei developed itself more expressively in that state and in its capital, the category work appears connected to social practices codified in the sphere called scientific-educational and assumes the form of scientific-intellectual work, from that originates the Cultural Centers, in which are juxtaposed the scientific discourse and the Christian-Catholic values.
