Abstract

A two year MSc scholarship is submitted for development of experimental and computacional analysis of inter-channel interference in coherent optical communications systems using a test-bed designed and built by Prof. Conforti along the PITE Project-Fapesp-Padtec proc. 56024-4 titled " Optical Coherent Technologies". The dissertation will involve degradation and performance analysis of a 16-QAM modulated channel (electronic rate with 4 levels up to 56 Gbit/s) when an neighbor DQPSK modulated interfering channel (electronic rate of 2 up to 56 Gbit/s) is present. The eye diagrams (signal and interference) will be analyzed as a function of the optical wavelength distance between channels as well as the degradation of the error rate (BER) of the DQPSK signal (obtained using a coherent receiver and/or delay Interferometer). Non-linear effects as well as the development of digital processing computer (DSP) programs are not included and will be under the responsibility of other members of this or other groups. The project will be carried out with the research group of DMO-FEEC-Unicamp, being an integral part of the CEPOF Research plan (Fapesp Center for Innovation in Optics and Photonics - Proc. 2005/51689-2) and Fapesp PITE Project with PadTec (Proc. 56024-2007/4, whose coordinator is Prof. Dr. Evandro Conforti). The tests shall be carried out on the lab implemented during the Fapesp Proc. 1995-9262 8 titled "Electro-optical Switching with Carrier Reuse of Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers", with additional instrumentation from other laboratories of CEPOF. The candidate is formed at the University of Passo Fundo, RS, with excellent grades in undergraduate course. This work also should involve the analysis of signal propagation in recirculation loops and is being developed in parallel with the doctoral thesis of Peterson Rocha, also under the guidance of Prof. Conforti. The work will be performed by co-supervision of Dr. Napoleão dos Santos Ribeiro (Fapesp scholarship until Nov. 2012 and Capes over 3 years, since he has received the prize "Capes 2010 best Thesis" in the area of Eng. IV).
