Abstract

This work aims to investigate the cognitive process of trichromats and dichromats color-blind drivers. The In-Car Route Guidance and Navigation Systems (RGNS) may put a cognitive overload on the drivers due to the presence of unnecessary information. The use of RGNS by dichromats color-blind people may present problems related to lack of information legibility and comprehension. Thus, it is necessary to understand the reasons are taken by the trichromats and dichromats drivers when selecting certain types of urban elements for navigation in urban spaces. Since one of the main stages of the cartographic design consists of selecting information, it is crucial to investigate the cognitive maps of drivers, related to their needs for route guidance information. It will be accomplished an investigation of the cognitive maps of the two groups of drivers highlighted, in two stages. In the first year, it will be applied tests in a group of color-blind drivers, and in the second year, the tests will be done in a group of trichromats drivers. For each stage, it will be used the techniques of map sketch and verbal notes to collect data. The urban elements and their visual and cognitive levels of attractiveness will be analyzed between trichromats and dichromats color-blind, as well between trichromats men and women. The analyses seek to understand if the use of landmarks could be related to the draw skills, making a comparison of the sketch maps and verbal notes. The results obtained from this work may provide important indications for conceiving and enhancing RGNS. These indications consist in presenting suggestions about the types of landmarks that are preferred by the dichromats' drivers and the reasons for selecting those elements. (AU)
