Abstract

This research project in Portugal is part of the doctorate research called "Rock here, rock there: the rock production in Brazil and Portugal, between the debate national/popular and the clash alienated/politicized - 1970/1985" that aims to do comparative History between Brazilian and Portuguese rock. Therefore, the main objective of this research project is to look for empiric and analytic elements that contribute the thesis that the rock produced in Portugal, just like in Brazil, during the period of 1970-1985, expressed and produced musical messages with political and social criticisms. For that, we will focus our research in the newspapers Diário de Notícias and Diário Popular, as well as research the specialized music magazine Mundo da Canção. Besides that, we will make a bibliographical survey and the acquisition of the discography of Portuguese rock. This way, this doctorate research in Portugal is justified for the knowledge and understanding and to analyze historically what meant "national" rock production (Portuguese/Brazilian, both in Portuguese language) before the wide diffusion of the American and British rock; as well as the role carried out by the musical genre, their producers and products in the cultural-political debate centered in the discussion of the "national and popular", and which were the most appealing messages of the genre on the social life and politics experienced by each country, that, language aside, had in common the experience of the dictatorship and of the redemocratization in relatively close periods.
