Abstract

This research stage which is proposed here, if accepted, will be done under the supervision of the Professor Adriana Veríssimo Serrao, from the University of Lisbon (FLUL), during the months of September 2012 to March 2013. The research is meant to work on some issues that concern the "Philosophy of Landscape", which is the supervisor's expertise. The aim of this stage is to deepen the conceptual basis that will support our doctoral research "The Cerrado as landscape: the dynamics of aesthetic appropriation of the territory" at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of São Paulo. In the ambit of the Philosophy of Landscape it is intended to obtain subsidies for the articulation of some of the theories about the processes involved in the building of the cultural landscape values, which are the themes dealt with the main hypotheses of the doctorate research. They are: a) The importance of landscape to the modernity and the relationship between the concepts of "landscape" and "Nature", following the works of Georg Simmel and Joachim Ritter; b) The processes of aesthetic and cultural appropriation of Nature (in the sense of territorial extension that gives itself to be seen and lived in) based on the experience of it, and the possible contributions to the understanding of this dynamics taken from the phenomenological thought. In this interest, we will follow the work of Augustin Berque, Alain Roger, Arnold Berleant and Nicolas Grimaldi, mainly; c) The possibility of criticizing the architectural, urbanistic and landscape production from their relationship with the landscape, whether as a direct influence (being a reaction to the landscape, for example, through the opening of views that incorporate landscape as architectural setting) or as a second-order (representation of the landscape). To reach this aim, we will follow primarily the work of Augustin Berque. Among the planned activities it is included those related to the course "Philosophy of Landscape", given by the supervisor of this stage at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon, besides the bibliographic research, interviews, participation in events and the production of a paper about the themes which will be studied during this stage.
