Abstract

It is proposed in this research project to evaluate the effect of micromachining with high speed cutting on surface integrity, chip formation and cutting specific energy of materials with ultrafine grains. The proposal is to investigate the mechanisms of chip formation of the type quasi-shearing-extrusion, defects in the machined surface and quantification of the surface finishing of parts, and also the cutting specific energy in relation to the variation of the feed per tooth of the tool. Micromilling tests will be based on the use of micromachining a center of ultra-high speed Mitutoya CMM. Micromachining operations selected will be the end-milling without using cutting fluid. The micromills of 0.8 mm diameter, coated with a PVD-TiN and PVD-TiAlN, to be used are compatible with the purposes of research to withstand the high speeds required for the testing of high speed cutting. A dynamometer for measuring forces in micromachining will also be used for subsequent calculation of the specific cutting energy.
