Abstract

This research aims to proceed with other projects developed with support from FAPESP. It will bring together the analyses already published with new ones, completing the seventeen Villa-Lobos string quartets. The analyses are published in proceedings and journals (Salles 2008; 2010; 2012a; 2012b; 2012c) and focuses on the structural aspects of this cycle of quartets. The current project intends to expand this analytical field from the more specific strategies (Estrella, 1970; Tarasti, 2009; Salles, 2009; Silva, 2011) and to the more general theoretical approaches (Forte, 1973; Oliveira, 1998). This process goes further, searching for correlations between structure and meaning (Ratner, 1980; Hatten, 2004; Agawu, 2009) and style analysis (LaRue, 2008; Rosen, 1998). Thus the topics in Villa-Lobos music will be defined and compared to the classical tradition of the string quartet as a genre, as well its developments in the beginning of the 20th Century. (AU)
