Abstract

Among the many studies that seek solutions to the challenges faced by the construction industry, the target costing (TC) approach is a topic that has attracted increasing interest from researchers in the field of construction management due to the good results obtained in its use in the product development process in companies of the manufacturing industry. Research conducted primarily in the U.S. has often replaced the term "target costing" to "target value design". TVD is an adaptation of the original TC concept for the construction industry and TVD research has been undertaken within the existing framework of lean project delivery. On the other hand, the research focus of studies that has contributed to the TC theoretical development in Brazil is the possibility of TC application in the developing process of social housing projects. Results of these studies show that low-levels of collaboration between stakeholders as one of the challenges in the TC application in construction. Currently, there is very little understanding in construction of what collaboration really means, what actions it implies and what responsibilities it puts on collaborating parties. In particular, there are knowledge gaps regarding how TC principles can be extended throughout the construction supply chain. Thus, a number of aspects that will be better detailed in this proposal led the proponent to claim a scholarship for research internship in Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL) at the University of California Berkeley under the supervision of Prof. Glenn Ballard. A case study in successful TVD projects will be adopted as the research strategy. Results of this research internship could aid wider TC applications especially in the construction context of emerging economies (e.g., Brazil), by means of developing a more collaborative interaction in typical construction supply chains.
