Abstract

The subtribe Pericopina (Erebidae: Arctiinae) comprises 38 genera, found exclusively in the neotropics. Studies on the taxonomy and phylogeny for this group are scarce. Among the genera listed in Pericopina, Dysschema Hübner, 1818 is the larger, currently consisting of 88 species, all distributed exclusively in the Neotropical region. Given the fact that the genus has never been revised, there is no consensus on the number of species enrroled in. This project is part of the cladistic analysis of the subtribe Pericopina and taxonomy of the genus Dysschema, which includes a survey of morphological characters for the subtribe, and the study of the types and representative series, description of new species and distribution of the species currently enrolled in the genus. However, for these objectives to be achieved by satisfying the prerequisites for a excellence morphological-compared and taxonomic study, it is necessary visit to American collections, recognized worldwide as important depositaries of specimens from the Neotropical region. This activity is justified by the following reasons: (i) the need for a revision study through typical series analysis, practice critical and often unique alternative for projects developed with groups taxonomically neglected, (ii) unavailability of specimens and representative series in the museums already visited in Europe. This project was based on a previous stay of five months in the United States with visits to the collections of the following institutions: National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (stage 11 weeks), American Museum of Natural History, New York (two weeks), Museum of Comparative Zoology, Boston (one week), Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh (two weeks), Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago (one week); Essig Museum of Entomology, Berkeley (one week) and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles (two weeks).
