Abstract

The knowledgement related with the process involved to silage production may improve the efficiency and hygienic quality to animal products. The microbial associated population may also depend on crop management and storage of forage sources and concentrates. The agronomic background of the crop culture, in general, may explain the microbial population contained in the substrate. Diversity and contamination status may help on understanding the silage fermentation profile and aerobic stability. Inter and intra interactions among microbial species may change fermentation endproducts significantly. The experimental design is a randomized block design with four replications. The maize cultivar AG 1051 ("dent") and IAC 8390 ("flint") will be harvested in three physiological stages: whole plant silage, wet grain silage and dry grain. The harvested plants will be fractionated and weigheted, and the grain will be ground and ensiled for 0, 7, 21, 60 and 120 days. The fractional parts of the plant, as well as samples of whole plant will be analysed for chemical composition. The microbial diversity will be assessed independently cultivation by the technique of Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) and PCR products from specimens that exhibit changes in the community with the time of ensiling, stage of maturity and/or texture of the endosperm, will be sequenced by pyrosequencing. Such tools can point to the existence of great genetic diversity not yet recorded in high moisture corn silage. Based on the gene sequences, phylogeny will be studied, by using specific programs leading to ecological parameters related with richness and diversity.
