Abstract

Moraceae shows a great diversity in architecture of inflorescence and flower in terms of shape, degree of condensation and fusion, expressed in sexual systems and pollination syndromes, although it is considered a monophyletic group. Inflorescences are characterized as raceme, spike, cenanto (typical of Dorstenia) and syconium (typical of Ficus), unisexual or bisexual, solitary or in pair. Sexual systems comprise monoecy, ginodioecy, dioecy and androdioecy. Evolution of floral traits within Moraceae occurred together with changes in pollination biology, correlating the presence of involucral bracts to the change from anemophily to entomophily. Developmental studies about inflorescence and flower are scarce in the family with cases of loss and suppression of reproductive whorls that results in unisexual flowers (dicliny). It is noteworthy the reports of pseudomonomery and ascidiate type of carpel in the family, conditions considered plesiomorphic in angiosperms. Taking into account the diversity of inflorescence architecture and sexual system in Moraceae as well as the phylogenetic relationships that are well-established for the group, the aim of this work is to study the morphology and development of inflorescence and flower in species of independent lineages of Moraceae to understand the origin of this diversity. We expect that the ontogenetic vias that results in different types of inflorescences and flowers are homologous, thus reflecting the evolutionary history of the group. Our methods includes: (a) collection of inflorescences of several sizes, from one species per tribe, totaling six species of at least two individuals from each monoecious species, and four individuals from dioecious species; (b) surface analysis under scanning electron microscopy; and (c) histological examination under light microscopy. Data obtained will be compared qualitatively within the family and with the closest groups. (AU)
