Abstract

Since the introduction of sugarcane in Brazil, after the faster and voluptuous trade of Brazil wood, to the modern and specialized monoculture plantations, the sugarcane has become intrinsic portion of the Brazil history, not only in economic sphere but in the imagination of generations that followed as much as a factor of exponential growth of income and indelible depletion of natural resources, land concentration, rural migration and widespread unemployment. The relevance obtained by the state of Sao Paulo in the twentieth century, boosted by the National Program of Alcohol (Proálcool) in 1975, meant that the environmental impacts of the project sugar bowl do is increase due to the demand for alcohol, in a context of global energy crisis. Despite a large historiography production on the issue of cane sugar in the country, including on the Proálcool and its political consequences, economic and social, there is a significant lack of comprehensive surveys that map the environmental impacts.Using the environmental history, this research project aims to contribute to this historiographical gap, basing on careful literature review and a variety of sources and disciplines to understand and map the environmental impacts in the state of São Paulo in a period which covers the creation of the Alcohol Program to the arrival of flex-fuel technology in the country in 2003, when there was a new incentive to produce alcohol national sharply in São Paulo.
