Abstract

In Brachyura, the superfamily Majoidea is represented by a morphologically cohesive group that inhabits almost all regions of the planet. Majoidea is nowadays divided into six families, being the Epialtidae, subfamily Epialtinae, composed of 115 described species, within which only 16 have the larval development described. Menaethius monoceros is an epilating crab commonly found in the Indo-Pacific, Tasmanian, and Red Sea regions. Two previous works have partially described this species; however, these descriptions have flaws and lack information on several appendages. Thus, it is necessary a complete and detailed description of the larval morphology of M. monoceros. The aims of the work are: (I) describe in detail all larval stages of Menaethius monoceros (Latreille, 1825) and compare the results with the partial descriptions available; (II) compare the larval development of Menaethius monoceros with the other Epialtinae species with larval cycle described; (III) and find characters that could help in the identification of Menaethius monoceros from the other Epialtinae.(AU)
