Abstract

Projects proceed through the National Congress for the creation of nine states in Brazil, and many others projects are archived. Most of the proposals are for the Amazon and Northeast regions, but one of them also proposes the state of Sao Paulo East. This model of territorial division based in increasing the number of states is a matter that is currently dealt, often as mere speech, as if the geographical ideologies were not connected to the process of combined and unequal development of capitalism. The main objective is to investigate the relationship between: the current phase of imperialist capital, the creation of new states and the expansion of agricultural and mineral boundaries in the territorial funds existing in the country. The Brazilian territory has historically been divided according to geographical expansion of capital, therefore a new state may be a factor and consequence of this expansion. To achieve the main goal it will be analyzed the political discourse contained in each project in progress, so as to identify the geographical ideologies. Regarding the materiality, a survey of the works from the Accelerated Growth Program (PAC) under construction and planned to the west and southeast of Pará state, regions claimed as the Tapajós and Carajás, respectively, will be done. These are the two most advanced cases in regard to the steps of approving such a project. With the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) it will be produced maps that represent the questions raised here about the territory of Pará and a political map of Brazil with the projects in progress. Finally, the dissertation as a whole will be a result of this research. (AU)
