Seminal characterization of the mandi-pintado, Pimelodus britskii along a breeding season

Abstract

The construction of dams to produce electricity is a common practice nowadays causing environmental impacts on the fish fauna reducing the population and often leading to extinction. The Pimelodus britskii, also known as mandi-pintado, is an endemic specie from the Iguaçu river, which environment is impacted by five reservoirs. In order to minimize the damming impacts on the fish fauna its necessary to adequate the reproductive management of the species, evaluating the possible repopulation and the icthyofaunistic control. The aim of this work is to evaluate the spermatic production of the P. britskii along a breeding season, from August 2012 to March 2013, being the experiment carried out in the Instituto de Pesquisa em Aquicultura Ambiental (INPAA), Toledo, Paraná. Forty fish will be divided in four treatments (10 fish/treatment), using different hormonal doses: 0 mg; 3,0 mg; 0,5 e 3,0mg; 0,5 e 7,0 mg (carp pituitary) and after 240 degree-hours, by abdominal massage towards brain-caudal, the semen will be collected and evaluated. Will be measured the volume, coloration and pH, and analyzed the motility, concentration, survivor, spermatic morphology, as well as, the osmolarity. The data will be submitted to an analysis of variance at 5% of significance and in case of effect will be applied multiple linear regression analysis at the same significance level.
