Abstract

Indirect contact with the oral microflora, the pacifiers represent an ideal place for biofilm growth and a potential source of infection. Their cleaning should be performed regularly, but the literature lack disinfection protocols accessible to the public and easy to perform. The most widely adopted procedure for the disinfection of pacifiers is water-boiling but difficult to implement in daily life. Thus, the search for alternative methods is of great importance. This study will evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the solutions alcohol vinegar, apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium bicarbonate. Initially, the solutions will be evaluated against standard strains of S. mutans, S. pyogenes, C albicans, S. aureus, and E. coli testing by agar diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration, minimal microbicidal concentration. The two solutions with the best results will be used to determine the concentration of biofilm eradication. After, these solutions will be used to disinfect contaminated microcosm collected pacifiers in use by five healthy children between 2 and 5 years. For this test, the pacifiers will be sterilized and inoculated experimentally with the microcosm. This is grown for 48 hours at 37°C and 5% CO2. For disinfection of pacifiers spray application with the test solutions will be held. Negative control groups (saline) and positive (chlorhexidine) are included. After disinfection, the biofilm will be dispersed and the microbial count is performed. Specimens will not be processed or analyzed by SEM. The results, expressed in CFU, will be compared statistically to determine the efficacy of disinfection of the solutions tested. (AU)
