Abstract

Oysters of Pinctada genus are of great interest for aquaculture due good quality meat for human consumption and pearls production. The oysters farming is very old and due introduction in different geographical areas, numerous taxonomic uncertainties arose regarding the species belonging to this genus. There is great difficulty in distinguishing species based on morphological measurements, which indicates the necessity of using other methods such as molecular analyzes. Genetic sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes in populations of marine oysters have been developed in other countries, allowing to obtain information about its diversification and speciation. This study aims to identify and analyze the species of Pinctada genus found on the coast of São Paulo in order to understand the phylogenetic relationships among these animals. Another objective is to conduct an analysis of stocks sampled population in São Paulo coast, comparing them to other populations of the western Atlantic, in order to investigate the variability, gene flow and its current status. The results of this study will contribute to the proper management of these populations and to guide new farming of great economic importance.
