Abstract

This paper nominates as its theme of study the political debates regarding education inserted in the construction process of the Brazilian National State. The object of investigation consists in the purposes debated for the Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte Seminary, located in Mariana, which was the site of the Minas Gerais bishopric between the years from 1829 to 1835. During those years, the institution was the scenario of strives referring to the formative concern of "youth". Bishop Dom Frei José da Santíssima Trindade and the teacher and canon Antonio José Ribeiro Bhering were centerpieces in this collision. The main goal in this paper consists in identifying the projects defended by these two individuals, relating them to the context of State and nation constitution. This way, one operates from issues placed in local and provincial extent, although they are linked to themes approached in the national sphere. It will be used as primary basis the mineiro newspaper called O Novo Argos, in which Ribeiro Bhering was the editor, and also the personal files from the bishop Dom Frei José.
