Abstract

The painting The Last Judgment and the Mass of Saint Gregory, dating from the fifteenth century, is one of the rare late-medieval works existing in Brazil, it is part of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP). However, despite the excellent opportunity it presents to historians of medieval art, hitherto it has not been the subject of detailed research. Therefore, our goal is to analyze such picture, observing in particular the various elements in it that refers to "sacrament of bread," and that makes it a fertile object of studies on Eucharistic doctrine. We propose, specifically, to investigate how this painting relates to the process of legitimation of the doctrine of the Eucharist in the context in which it was produced, the Valencian society of the fifteenth century.
